Palais Eschenbach

Una festa dove vale davvero la pena andare a Vienna è quella al Palais Eschenbach, un palazzo storico che viene utilizzato come una discoteca per la festa di apertura del semestre e per la festa Erasmus. Avrete quindi più di un'occasione l'anno: Settembre-Ottobre e Marzo.
Il prossimo è il 24 Settembre.

A party to attend in Vienna is the one in Palais Eschenbach, an historical palais used as a club for the opening semester party and for the Erasmus party. You have several occasions in the year: September-October and March.
Next one is the 24th of September.

Drinking in Vienna

Ci sono molti bei posti a Vienna dove bere qualcosa.
I prezzi non sono alti e si può fumare in molti locali (ci sono anche le aree non fumatori, tranquilli).
Se vi piace la birra prendete direttamente una pinta, la differenza con la mezza è di pochi centesimi.
Se volete provare qualcosa di nuovo provate la Radler, mezza birra e mezza limonata.

There are a lot of lovely place in Vienna to have a drink.
Prices are not to high and you still can smoke in lots of places (don’t worry, there are non smoking areas as well).
If you like beer just have a pint: you’ll pay it just few cents more than an half pint.
If you want to try something new try a Radler, half beer half lemonade.

Caffè a Vienna

I Caffè Viennesi fanno parte della tradizione della città.
Si può stare delle ore indisturbati anche ordinando un solo caffè, ma vi consiglio di accompagnarlo con una fetta di torta.

Ecco qualche posto:

Café Central. Un caffè storico, aperto nel 1860. È uno dei miei caffè preferiti, uno dei più belli di Vienna. Ci sono due grandi quadri degli imperatori Francesco Giuseppe e Sissi e la vasta scelta di torte è in bella vista. Il fine settimana c’è un pianista che suona.

Cafè Sacher. Per provare la famosa torta che è stata inventata qui, magari prima di andare all’opera, che è lì accanto.

Palmenhaus. Una specie di serra gigante nei giardini del Palazzo Imperiale.

Halle Café e Café Leopold, al Museumsquartier, sono i caffè del Kusthalle e del Leopold Museum.
Sono dei bellissimi caffè moderni ed il fine settimana il Leopold si trasforma in un raffinato discobar.

Cafés play an important role in Viennese tradition.
Customers can linger alone for hours ording just a coffee, but I suggest you to have it along with a slice of cake.

Here are some tips:

Café Central. An historical café, opened in 1860. It is one of my favourite, one of the most beautiful in town. There are two bif paintings of the emperor Franz Joseph and of the empress Sissi; and the selection of cakes is in good sight. On weekends there is a piano player.

Café Sacher. Try the famous cake, invented in this place, maybe before going to the opera, very closed.

Palmenhaus. Looks like a huge greenhouse in the Hofburg palace gardens.

Halle Café and Café Leopold, at the Museumsquartier, are the cafés of the Kunsthalle and of the Leopold Museum. They are modern cafés and on weekends the Leopold becomes an distinguished discobar.

I musei di Vienna

Ecco una lista dei musei che secondo me vale la pena visitare a Vienna:

1) Leopold Museum. E’ il museo più importante del Museumsquartier, il quartiere dei musei inaugurato nel 2001. Ospita la più vasta collezione al mondo di Egon Schiele ed alcune opere di Gustav Klimt. Tra le esposizioni temporaneee, fino al 4 Ottobre 2010, ce n’è una su Otto Muehl. Prezzi: adulti 11 Euro, studenti 7 Euro.

2) Secession. Per visitare l’edificio ed il celebre Fregio di Beethoven di Gustav Klimt, ma anche per quello che era lo scopo originale della struttura,le mostre temporanee di arte contemporanea, ora al primo piano. Quest’anno c’è stata un esibizione sul sesso molto discussa. Per avere accesso a tutte le collezioni il prezzo è di 8,50 Euro per gli adulti, 5 Euro per gli studenti.

3) Belvedere. Il Belvedere è uno dei palazzi barocchi più belli del mondo. Si divide in Alto e Basso Belvedere. Nel primo c’è la collezione permanente dove si trova il famoso Bacio di Klimt. Nel secondo ci sono grandi esibizioni temporanee, fino al 3 Ottobre ce n’è una sulle belle addormentate nell’arte. I giardini sono bellissimi ed ideale per correre (non si paga per i giardini). Si può prendere un biglietto per una sola delle due parti o un cumulativo a 14 Euro per gli adulti, 10 Euro con riduzione studente.

4) Kunsthistorisches Museum. E’ impossibile visitarlo in una sola volta, c’è troppo: le collezioni imperiali degli Asburgo e molto altro. Alcuni affreschi sopra le arcate furono fatti da un giovane Gustav Klimt e a metà scalone si trova un Teseo e il Minotauro di Antonio Canova.
Prezzi: 10/7,50 Euro.

5) Kunsthalle. Museo di arte contemporanea. Il prezzo varia a seconda di quali esibizioni si vogliono visitare.


Some museums to visit in Vienna.

1) Leopold Museum. It is the most important one of the Museumsquartier, opened in 2001.
It contains the largest Egon Schiele collection in the world, together with major works by Gustav Klimt. Prices: adults 11 Euros, students 7 Euros.

2) Secession. Visit this unique building and the Beethoven Frieze by Gustav Klimt, but also the temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. A very controversial one about sex has been showed here last winter. The pass for all exhibitions costs 8,50 Euros, 5 with student discount.

3) Belvedere. The Belvedere is one of the most beautiful baroque palace in the world. There is Upper and Lower Belvedere. In the first one you have the permanent collection, where you can see the very famous Kiss by Klimt. In the second one there are temporary exhibitions, nowadays and till the 3rd of October there is one about sleeping beauty. Gardens are very beautiful and are a great place for jogging (there is no charge for the gardens). The pass for the whole palace is 14 Euros, 10 with student discount.

4)Kunsthistorisches Museum. Impossible to visit in just one day, there is too much: the imperial collections of the House of Hapsburg and more. Some frescos have been painted by a young Gustav Klimt, and you can find the Antonio Canova’s sculpture Teseo e il Minotauro.

5) Kunsthalle. It is the exhibition institution for international contemporary art. Prices depend on the exibitions, combitickets are possible.

Ho trovato una macchinetta delle fototessere vecchio genere, di quelle che fanno quattro foto diverse in bianco e nero.
La trovate al negozio del museo Halle al Museumsquartier in omaggio all'esposizione su Keith Harring. E fa quattro foto per soli due Euro!

It's at the Halle's museum's shop at the Museumsquartier, a tribute to the Keith Harring's exibition. And it's just for two Euros!

I balli

La stagione dei balli inizia la notte di San Silvestro con il Kaiserball al palazzo imperiale e si conclude il giovedì grasso con il Ballo dell´Opera.
È l´occasione per mettere un bel vestito e per vedere i più bei palazzi di Vienna: l´Opera, il Palazzo Imperiale (Hofburg) e il Municipio (Rathaus).
Quest´anno sono stata al ballo all´Hofburg organizzato dall´Agenzia Internazionale per l´Energia Atomica.

Se siete fuori stagione sappiate che verso giugno ci sono dei balli scolastici, più simili ai classici prom americani, meno cari e meno formali sull´abbigliamento.
L´anno scorso sono stata a quello della Business School.

The ball season starts the New Year´s Eve at the Hofburg, the Imperial Palace, with the Kaiserball
and ends the last Thursday before Lent with the Opera Ball.
It´s a great occasion to dress up and visit the most beautiful palaces of Vienna: the Opera, the Hofburg and the Rathaus.
I´ve been to the Hofburg Ball orginized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

If you are not visiting the city during the season there are several school balls, similar to classic American proms. They are cheaper and the dress code is not so strict.

I´ve been to the Business School one last year and I enjoyed it.

Mangiare a Vienna

Cosa mangiare a Vienna:

Con 1 Euro. Piccolo panino col salame in qualsiasi supermercato, hamburger semplice al McDonald's, piccolo trancio di pizza nella metro di Pratestern (schifezza da provare: pizza al kebab).

Con 2 Euro. La specialità locale: la Leberkäse, una specie di Würstel gigante squadrato che viene tagliato a fette e mangiato nel pane. Da provare la versione grondante formaggio, la Käseleberkäse o quella ai peperoni.
Nei supermercati, nelle rosticcerie e nei chioschetti per strada, i Würstelstand.

Con 3 Euro. Come accade in Germania, il kebab è ormai una specialità locale grazie alla numerosa comunità turca e alla sua propensione a lavorare nella ristorazione economica. Potete provare anche la loro versione della pizza al taglio,soprattutto se siete dei noiosi criticoni: avrete qualcosa di cui lamentarvi.
Al Würstelstand si trovano anche hotdog di tutti i tipi, i più conosciuti sono il Burenwurst, il Käsekrainer e il Frankfurter. Niente maionese, si sceglie tra ketchup e senape.

Con 4 Euro. Nordsee è un fastfood tedesco specializzato in pesce.
Il miglior felafel della città si trova vicino Schwedenplatz e si chiama Maschu Maschu.
Il locale è molto piccolo, se trovate posto siete fortunati.


Con 5 Euro, ma anche meno. Mangia tutto quello che puoi, paga quanto vuoi. Questo è il motto di Der Wiener Deewan, un ristorante pachistano che ha aperto nel nono distretto a 5 minuti a piedi dalla fermata della metro viola Schottentor. Per chi interessa ha molti piatti vegetariani e da bere, come in tutta la città, si può prendere dell'acqua di rubinetto che qui è molto buona.
Cinque euro è il mio consiglio, fate come volete.

Con 6-7 Euro. Sushi a poco nei ristoranti Panasia. Anche qui potete ordinare acqua del rubinetto.

Con 10 Euro. Il Campus dell'Università di Vienna è molto piacevole per passare una serata d'estate. Ci sono molti ristoranti con cucina austriaca. Ma i Wiener Schnitzel si possono anche ordinare in qualsiasi birreria. Se volete spendere di meno sulla Berggasse, all'altezza della Liechtensteinstraße, trovate un ristorante con arredamento retrò americano stile Happy Days a prezzi bassissimi gestito da cinesi. La loro specialità sono ,appunto, i Wiener Schnitzel e se vi piace fare della sociologia da due soldi potrete fare profonde riflessioni e usare la parola melting pot.

What to eat in Vienna

For 1 Euro. Little salami sandwiches on sale in any supermarket, classic hamburger at McDonald's, little slice of pizza at Pratestern underground station (try the Kebab pizza!)

For 2 Euros. Traditional of Austria is Leberkäse, sort of big sausage cutted in slices and eaten with bread. Try the cheese version, Käseleberkäse, or the pepper one.

For 3 Euros. As in Germany, thanks to the big turkish community and its bent for working in the fast food field. Try their pizza too, especially if you like to complain: you might have a point.

For 4 Euros. Nordsee is a German fast food restaurant chain specialising in seafood. Maschu Maschu, close to Schwedenplatz, has the best felafel in town. The place is tiny, so lucky you if you get a table!

For 5 Euros. All you can eat, pay as you wish.
This is the slogan of Der Wiener Deewan, a Pakistani restaurant in the 9th district, 5 minutes walking from Schottentor subway station. There are many vegetarian dishes, and to drink you can order tap water for free, as in the whole city. My suggestion is to pay 5 Euros, but pay as you wish!

For 6-7 Euros. Cheap sushi at Panasia restaurants. Here as well you can order tap water.

For 10 Euros. The campus of the University of Vienna is very lovely for summer dinners. There are several restaurants with austrian cook.
Anyway you can order Wiener Schnitzel in any pub. If you want so save money, there is a very cheap restaurant in Berggasse, close to Lichtensteinstrasse. It has a retro american style, it´s runned by Chineses, and the special dish is Wiener schnitzel. If you like to sociology everything and to use the term melting pot.
